There's the usage of legendary crests
In the case of Diablo Immortal, there's the usage of legendary crests D2R Items (which can be purchased or earned) to increase the chances of finding a gem with a 5 star rating in dungeons that end the game. Although it's not exactly traditional in its approach to presentation (most gachas are played by "rolling" on a time-limited banner) the players are playing with randomness in the same way. In many ways it is the case that it's like the Diablo series has been working towards these kinds of mechanics since its beginning, like Maddy Myers wrote a few weeks back.
Diablo Immortal also, in clear terms, draws directly from the "feeding" technique that a lot of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese mobile games have adapted for more than 10 years. "Feeding" involves increasing the attributes, stats, or rarity of an item through making duplicates of a drop. The duplicates are fed to an item with similar rarity to boost the stats of the item. In general five copies are needed in order to max out a character or item.
My first exposure to "feeding" was through Fate/Grand Order, which was initially made available by Japan in July of 2015 and made a profit of $4 billion dollars in the world in the year 2019. To create a character that was the best it can be I had to purchase duplicates of every character. When a particular banner came along I spent more than 300 euros to get the five-star character I'd coveted since a long time. But I didn't get the exact copies I required to fully appreciate the full potential of this character. With the rates for the most popular 5-star characters currently being around 1percent, it's not a surprise that I failed to obtain a duplicate of the character while enjoying the game (which I've since removed). In July 2021, Fate/Grand Order was the seventh most popular mobile game to be sold all time, and was ranked next to Konami's Puzzle and Dragons, which is, as I mentioned, is also a gacha-based game.
In an GDC 2021 presentation, Genshin Impact developer Diablo 2 Resurrected Items (previously Mihoyo) outright admitted that the way it created characters was based on generating the most capital possible from its fans. In the case of Raiden Shogun as well as Kokomi characters reruns that took place in March 2022 alone brought the company over $33 million in revenues.
